Applications and Characteristics of Titanium Alloys in Aerospace and High-Performance Industries

Titanium Gr.5 Ti6Al4V screws are particularly suitable for applications in aerospace, and aircraft missiles, which also titanium alloy materials including titanium plates, titanium rods, titanium tubes, and titanium alloy fasteners can be used in these highly sophisticated industry intrinsic reasons, but forced by the high price of titanium alloy materials so that titanium alloys have always been subject to the application of the limit.

Titanium alloy density is generally 4.5g/cm3 or so, only 60% of steel, pure titanium strength is close to the strength of ordinary steel, some high-strength titanium alloys exceed the strength of many alloy structural steel. Therefore, the specific strength of titanium alloy (strength/density) is much greater than other metal structural materials and can produce units of high strength, good rigidity, and lightweight parts and components. At present, the aircraft engine components, skeleton, skin, fasteners landing gear, etc. use titanium alloy.

Titanium alloy demonstrates superior corrosion resistance in harsh environments, which is the main reason it is used in the manufacture of chemical equipment. It has good high and low-temperature properties, non-magnetizable and low thermal conductivity, and coefficient of thermal expansion.  The threads can easily be scuffed or seized during installation and locking of threaded fasteners. Here are some examples of titanium alloys that are sensitive to stress corrosion at suitably high temperatures. But this can be mitigated by some special processes.

Ti-6Al-4V is a heavy-duty alloy. The Z-small tensile strength of this titanium alloy fastener is 135,000 psi, which gives it high strength and satisfying toughness.Ti-6Al-4Mn has great resistance to creep and is easy to cast. Its strength characteristics and Ti-6Al-4V alloy equivalent, but slightly less toughness. Ti-1Al-8V-5Fe tensile strength of about 200,000 psi. To exaggerate its outstanding strength-quality ratio, this alloy is made of fasteners fastening force and has a 350,000 psi tensile strength of the same quality as the steel fasteners comparable. Two other titanium alloys, Ti-6Al-12Zr and Ti-6Al-6V-2Sn, are also sometimes used in the manufacture of fasteners.
